The quality.

Ulisse Caputo: "Evening work" (1909).

When you stand in front at mediocrity, you know it right away and you are able to define it: mediocrity is absence of quality.

Instead, when you meet the quality, of course you realize it immediately, but, mysteriously, you are not able to define it.

The quality is not merely the absence of mediocrity, but is absence of mediocrity combined with the presence of mystery.
In effect, when you meet a woman, you do not know ever completely why you love she.

Antonello da Messina: "The virgin annunciate" (around 1475/1476).
